............... "From the Classroom to Teletandem: Towards Autonomous Second Language Acquisition via the Internet"
In this cours, we will be experimenting with a combination of face-to-face naturalistic language acquisition of PORTUGUESE in the classroom followed by a period of inter-continental autonomous language acquisition via Teletandem!
The course will include an intensive 6-day block seminar from July 14-19, 2008 (Monday-Saturday). [This very early date has been chosen because of the availability of Portuguese teachers (from Brasil, Germany and Portugal) and so that the course participants can begin their Teletandem sessions from wherever they happen to be in September, when Brazilian students are back on campus].

During our block seminar, we will have three hours of instruction in elementary Portuguese from 9-13 in the morning. In the afternoons, we will mett from 1-4 p.m. to study the history of and the principles behind "autonomous language learning" and to investigate the theory and pratcice of the Teletandem approach.
From September until mid-December, each participant will be expected to participate in a weekly Teletandem experience (German or English <--> Portuguese) with a partner at the UNESP in Brazil. We will meet for a final session in January to review and analyze the results of our Teletandem research.
