About dict.cc: English German dictionary service designed to share knowledge

Guess what dergestalt means:
A: to shrinkB: to get excitedC: to dungeonD: to such an extent
The goal of dict.cc is to make it possible to share your vocabulary knowledge with the world. This is the main difference to other translation services - every user is encouraged to contribute to the dictionary by adding and/or verifying English-German translation suggestions. The resulting vocabulary database can be downloaded, but please note that this is just a flat text file, not translation software (although the data might be usable for dictionary software).

Besides browsing the dictionary or searching for an English-German translation you can also ask and answer questions related to the English or German language using the translation forum. To improve your language skills try the vocabulary trainer. If you'd like to translate German words while browsing the web, just install dict.cc's free toolbar.

Disclaimer: The correctness of the translations can not be guaranteed (nobody is perfect), I can only guarantee that all input will be checked carefully. In case you spot a typo or any other mistake, feel free to notify me (Paul) anytime, I promise to correct it promptly!
News & History (RSS)
2008-12-31: New vocabulary trainer lists: Swedish-German and Swedish-English by Sephysto. Thank you very much!
2008-12-30: New "official" vocabulary trainer lists: English-French, English-Italian, German-French and German-Italian, all featuring a basic vocabulary set. It would be great to find some users willing to create basic lists like these for other languages by copying the English-German list into a new one and using maintain/edit to change the terms. Upon notification I would check the lists and maybe publish them at the vocab trainer overview page.
2008-12-20: Contribute / Input Limitation: As suggested by several users and after an extensive discussion in the forum I'm testing the following regulation to reduce the ever-growing pile of unverified translation suggestions: As of today, each user can only suggest new entries if he/she has less than 200 still waiting for verification.
To speed up the verification process I recommend using the comment field to give good source information.
